A St. Johnsbury man was placed into police custody three times in just over 24 hours after officials say he broke into an apartment, assaulted hospital staff and tried to assault an off-duty police officer.

The Burlington Police Department first encountered 42-year-old Brandon Clough on Sunday night after a resident of King Street told police that someone had broken into his apartment.

The resident told police that when he arrived home, someone had set his door chain from the inside and refused to come out. The person, later identified as Clough, then told the resident he was going to take a shower.
