New blood cancer treatment saving lives, UVM officials say

University of Vermont Cancer Center officials say a promising treatment for blood cancer launched last year appears to be saving lives.

UVM launched its CAR T-Cell therapy program in February 2023, the only health care institution in Vermont and northern New York to provide the treatment. Now, officials say 12 patients have been treated and many of them are still free of cancer.

John McMahon spoke with UVM’s Dr. James Gerson and Eric Bergeron, a patient who has received the treatment.
