Mikaela Shiffrin gives shout out to Rutland Regional Medical Center following Killington World Cup injury
Mikaela Shiffrin is recovering following a crash at this year's Stifel Killington World Cup, and the champion skier recently took some time to update her fans on her recovery.
Shiffrin, a Burke Mountain Academy alum, was in her final run of the day as she was looking to secure her seventh career victory in Vermont when she crashed into one of the gates and tumbled into the netting.
U.S. Ski and Snowboard said the skier "suffered a puncture wound into the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma." However, it's also been reported that Shiffrin did not suffer ligament damage or injury to her bones and internal organs.
In an update on social media, Shiffrin thanked her fans for their support and gave a special shout-out to the Vermont healthcare workers who helped her following the accident.
"Reflecting back on the crash after about a week, I'm incredibly thankful the crash wasn't worse," Shiffrin wrote. "It was damn close to piercing some organs that would have changed this situation entirely for the worse. I'm grateful for my team, everybody at both Rutland Regional Medical Center and Vail Health who have been taking care of me, and the outpouring of love and kind words from all of you."
Shiffrin went on to say that she hopes that the Killington World Cup will be back again next year, and congratulated this year's winners on their success.
