Hospital Budget Hearings Complete
Vermont's hospitals last week concluded their budget presentations to the Green Mountain Care Board (GMCB). This unique process provides the regulator and Vermonters with a transparent view of hospitals and health systems—the challenges they face, the services they provide, the community improvement work they do, the investments they make and so much more.
The GMCB heard how hospitals are working collaboratively every day to address the opioid crisis and advance primary prevention efforts through RiseVT. Other hospitals described initiatives around housing, downtown revitalization, food insecurity and mental health. The list goes on.
As I mentioned in a public comment to the GMCB, at the same time hospitals manage all these challenges and make all these contributions, they have also been leaders in health reform and collectively stayed very close to the regulator’s net revenue target. That is no small feat.
The process continues from here as we await budget orders from the GMCB. Having witnessed all of the hospital budget presentations, I hope the members of the GMCB were as compelled as I was by the dedication and hard work happening in Vermont’s hospitals every day.
I am proud to represent this group of health care providers and look forward to continued productive dialogue with the GMCB and other state leaders.
